Maddie’s is the type of local place there just aren’t enough of these days.
I’ve been forced to eat more veggies since my angioplasty, so I might as well make the most of it. The recipes in the Times article include root veggies common in winter and also fennel, an Italian veggie I grew up loving which now seems available more times of year than it once was.

I went down for breakfast there our first day but after that I stayed in my room while other family members ate at the breakfast buffet. The temptations would have been simply too great and watching others eat what I cannot was just too painful a way to start my days.
Not being able to get an Angus burger, which is what I would have done before my angioplasty, was very depressing. And to make it even more depressing, some whole wheat toast I asked for came already covered in melted butter.
