Back at Panera, but not for long

Before my first heart attack in 2012, the Panera chain of fast-casual restaurants was a regular stop for me at lunch time. But the overwhelming amounts of salt in most of their offerings meant I couldn’t go there post-heart attack, as I wrote back in 2014.

This week, however, I found myself with little choice but a Panera, so I thought I would give it another try. Panera salad offerings are plentiful and I found one with a reasonable amount of salt if I used my own oil and vinegar instead of a store dressing. But the tiny size of what I received compared to the high price means I won’t be heading to Panera again anytime soon.

Panera dropping ingredients; how about cutting the salt?

Panera is joining a growing list of food companies and restaurant chains that are dropping ingredients consumers are increasingly uneasy about eating. But the St. Louis-based chain’s announcement didn’t mention cutting salt, as far as I could tell from published reports.

Panera positions itself as being healthier than fast food, but like others who do the same, Subway, Chipotle, or Chicago’s Protein Bar, that positioning largely ignores the massive amounts of salt their offerings still contain. Panera, get the salt out, please!

Panera used to be a go-to lunch place for me. From 1998 through 2005, I worked out of a home office and lunch at a nearby Panera was a great break during the workday.

But since my angioplasty, I have been working to eliminate salt from my diet and so Panera is a place I can no longer eat. Something as healthy sounding as its Mediterranean salmon salad, for example, has 990 mgs of salt, nearly two-thirds of my daily 1,200 target. And that’s without dressing, something else I no longer use.
