Super Bowl low-salt, low-fat snacks: try filling these mini-puff pastry cups

The Big Game is coming this Sunday but if you’re on a low-salt, low-fat, low-sugar diet, most traditional game-day munchies are out for you. I’ve written before about looking for low-salt potato chips and salt-free taco chips, but even with those you still have to worry about fat content.

But recently I came across these mini puff pastry cups. Two shells have only half a gram of fat and 15 mgs of salt, so you can actually eat a bunch and not consume all that much fat and salt. Fill them with salt-free treats like cut-up tomatoes or pieces of shrimp. Or make something hot (watch for a recipe for my low-salt salsa, tomato, mushroom filling later this week).

These mini cups are low in fat and salt and sugar-free. Fill them with salt-free treats for Super Bowl munching.

The ones I bought at a Safeway are already cooked and sold frozen. Thaw them to eat. If you fill with anything wet, like salsa, eat them the same day or they get a bit soggy in the frig over night.

Top 5 no salt, no fat, no sugar ingredients of 2014

Everyone loves lists, so I thought it would be a good idea to look at traffic to this site in 2014 to see what were the top ingredients, recipes and restaurant reviews visitors viewed.

Many that made each list surprised me and, alas, one ingredient isn’t available anymore where I originally found it. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Without further ado, here are the Top 5 most-read ingredients posts for 2014:

1. Salt-free teriyaki sauce — a taste test of three varieties

After my angioplasty and being placed on a low-salt, low-fat, low-sugar diet, I never thought I’d be tasting teriyaki sauce again given it’s normally high sodium content. So you can imagine how thrilled I was when I discovered that Mrs. Dash offered a salt-free teriyaki. This post compares two Mrs. Dash varieties I found with a so-called low-sodium variety that still has too much sodium for my requirements.

Students will continue getting high salt diets

Congress decided this weekend it’s ok to keep American school-children addicted to high-salt foods. Lobbying by the food industry and school boards succeeded in getting a provision put in a final federal budget bill that will prevent the government from requiring less salt in school lunch menu items.

Congress wants to keep American School children addicted to salt. Shame, shame shame on them.

This is obviously a major loss for America’s health. As someone who suffered from the ill-effects of too much salt in my diet for years and now struggles to find any prepared foods with low levels of salt, I am deeply saddened, although really not surprised, by this decision. Thomas’s multigrain English muffins: a tasty low-salt alternative

Bread is one of the biggest carriers of evil salt in our daily diets. If you’re trying to eliminate salt as I have been since my angioplasty, you’ve likely given up breads, indeed baked goods, of all kinds.

I have found one alternative, a whole wheat, salt-free bread at Trader Joe’s that I use in my Thanksgiving stuffing now. But I miss baked goods terribly, so I’m always on the lookout for other options. Continue reading “Thomas’s multigrain English muffins: a tasty low-salt alternative”

The salt demons start grabbing us early in life, new study finds

Salt has become one of the evil triangle of foods in my life, along with fat and sugar, since my angioplasty two years ago. Salt is in every processed food we eat, and especially so in snack and baked foods.

Pepperidge Farm Goldfish, once considered a healthy snack, really aren't for me.
Pepperidge Farm Goldfish, once considered a healthy snack, are one of many packed with salt. Read labels when buying for your children, and yourself.

So I wasn’t surprised by a recent headline I saw, Kids’ Food Cravings Mean Diet Too High in Salt, CDC Says.

“Kids love pizza, bologna, cheese and chicken nuggets. U.S. public health officials don’t like the salt in those foods and say a diet dominated by them may harm children’s future health,” the Bloomberg story notes. And the news just gets worse. The Crab Pot, a Seattle Pike Place Market fun standby

Our trip to Seattle included a stop early on at The Crab Pot in the city’s famed Pike Place Market. Yes, I know, the place is known as a tourist trap and many reviews complain of poor service in the evenings when it’s busy, but we were lured in by the seafeast in which they dump a bucket-load of seafood on your table and you have at it.

Me, preparing myself for the Crab Pot seafood feast.

We had better seafood at other Seattle spots, but for sheer fun, the Crab Pot still is worth a visit. WE did go in the late afternoon when it was empty, so service was good for us, being one of the very few tables filled at the time. Costco has switched bread crumb brands, shame on you Costco

I wrote early this year about a great panko breadcrumb find at Costco. Indeed, the giant box lasted me from February through August. But I was very disappointed when I went back to Costco recently only to find it had switched to a different brand of panko breadcrumbs — one that’s incredibly high in salt. Shame on you Costco!

Costco has dropped a low-sodium brand of panko and now carries this from McCormick, an offering loaded with salt. Shame on you Costco.

The warehouse store now carries McCormick brand Tuscan Herb panko bread crumbs. Anything that has a name like that is likely loaded with salt. A quick check of the nutrition panel confirmed my worst fears. A half-cup of this brand has 560 mgs of sodium, or a third of my daily limit. That’s simply unacceptable. Stella D’oro: an old friend offers a low-fat baked good

Growing up in an Italian-American household, Italian pastries and butter cookies were regular Sunday treats for me. In between those, we also regularly bought baked goods with Italian flair to them, such as Stella D’oro cookies.

Loved these as a kid and now, and they're low-fat.
Loved these as a kid and now, and they’re low-fat.

I crave anything baked these days since most baked goods don’t fit into my low-fat, low-salt needs. So I was wonderfully surprised recently to see old friend Stella D’oro come to my rescue with its anisette toast cookies. Continue reading “Stella D’oro: an old friend offers a low-fat baked good”

Dropped during the Pandemic —Trader Joe’s salt-free marinara sauce: worth a try

Note: This product has been dropped by Trader Joe’s during the Pandemic. This post was written long before Covid hit us. #ShameonTraderJoes

I wrote last year about finding a low-salt pre-made tomato sauce for the days when I don’t have any of my home-made version frozen and ready to use or don’t have the time to make some from scratch. I’ve bought Muir Glen and also found some house brand salt-free sauce at my local Jewel. Recently, though, I saw another choice at Trader Joe’s, its private label marinara sauce with no salt added.

Trader Joe's organic low-salt marinara sauce was a bit peppery for my taste but will do in a pinch.

The taste was a bit peppery to me when I first tried it. Like many ingredient offerings that go low-salt, the makers here may have thought pepper was a good substitute. I generally just want to taste the tomatoes though. The pepper taste was still there after cooking. If you’re a pepper fan, you should enjoy it. For me it was just ok.
