Sultan Kebab — a great find after a long day

It’s never fun being on a delayed flight, and it’s no fun waiting for someone on such a flight either.

So on a recent Friday night, my son and I were both tired and hungry when his flight finally made it to Chicago’s O’Hare Airport where I had been waiting to pick him up.

We’d planned to cook dinner once we got to our house, but were both hungry by the time he landed, so we went searching for food near O’Hare and found Sultan Kebab & Shawerma. It was a great find.

As we ordered (at almost 9 p.m.), the man behind the counter offered us free lentil soup he’d made. He wanted our reaction to it. It was delicious.

I grew up eating my mother’s Italian version of lentil soup and always hated it. I avoid lentils to this day because of it.

But the Sultan soup looked and tasted very different from what my mother made. There were no lentils visible in it, for example. The Sultan person suggested we put olive oil on it. I love olive oil, so the combination was perfect for me.

My son, who eats more Middle Eastern/Mediterranean food than I do, ordered a combo plate and powered through it, loving every bite.

I opted for a chicken plate with enough food for me to take some home for another meal. The chicken was tender and juicy, not an easy task to accomplish when cooking kebobs.

Our bill was $46.27 with drinks; my plate was $16.99, my son’s $20.99.

Sultan, I discovered looking online, has two locations in the Chicago area, the one we found in Rosement which is next to O’Hare, and another in Norridge, a close-in Northwest suburb not far from O’Hare either. I hope to try the Norridge location too.

So sometimes, long airport waits can have happy food endings.
