Two weeks into my GLP-1 weight-loss drug journey and I’ve lost five pounds and learned some lessons about how I’ll feel during this experiment to control my weight.
When I started taking Zepbound, the pharmacist who briefed me said not to expect any weight loss the first month when I’d be on the lowest dose. This was a time to get my body accustomed to the medication and see what side-effects would surface.
I’m sure that was to temper my expectations and keep me from emailing angrily about the lack of weight loss.
But that said, I was still surprised when I dropped four pounds the first week. That was followed by a one pound loss the second week after first gaining back a few pounds when the week began.
I took my third weekly shot last night and stand today five pounds lighter than when I started. How did that happen?
A friend who’s been on this for a year told me to expect always feeling constipated. That’s been somewhat true.
Having a cup of Trader Joes’ High Fiber Cereal every morning has largely addressed that issue. Let’s hope that continues as my dosage is increased after four weeks.
More interesting for me is that when I eat now, I quickly reach a point where I feel I can’t eat anymore.
I wouldn’t call it feeling full exactly. My brain is still telling me I’m hungry. But my body is telling me “don’t stuff another bite in here to you’ll explode like a Monty Python movie character.”
I was worried I wouldn’t enjoy my favorite foods any longer. That’s not exactly the case either. What I eat, I can still taste and enjoy. I just can’t physically eat as much as I want without feeling ill.
That means that on a recent visit to an Italian restaurant, the fruitti de mare I ordered (a favorite seafood dish) turned into three meals after I took most of it home from the restaurant for meals during the week.
Are there restaurant meals I still can finish? Yes, I discovered one last night, ordering squid at a new Greek restraint in my area, It was a fancy place with high prices and small portions, oddly just what I needed. You can see the plate in the photo on this post.
Back to my journey. I still feel hungry most of the time which may go to the fact that I’m a nervous eater and I’m anxious all the time and want to deal with that by eating.
I’m still waking up in the middle of each night feeling hungry but that happened before the Zepbound too. I hope that somehow goes away as I progress on this journey.
