A food blogger friend recently told me about Outer Spice, a brand of spices that offers no-salt and low-salt varieties. I’m always searching for low- to no-salt ways to give some taste to my post-angioplasty diet these days, so I got in touch with the Texas-based company and asked for samples to review.
I received the no-salt Outer Spice Spicy blend and Outer Spice original with sea salt — 95 mgs per half teaspoon. Tasting them straight out of the jars, the spicy variety tasted perhaps more spicy than I normally eat while the other tasted fine, if a bit salty to my palate which is largely devoid of salt these days.
But when I used both blends in cooking some swordfish, the flavors came alive for each. The spicey blend toned down after coming in contact with and being absorbed during the cooking of the swordfish. It provided a flavorful kick for the fish which can be bland if over-cooked. My wife tried the original with salt and enjoyed that as well.
We definitely enjoyed them both and would recommend them. I’ll stick to salt-free varieties. The company’s website lists a no-salt original as well. Bottles sell on the site for $6.99.
Bravo for offering a wonderful choice for those of us who have given up salt and are trying desperately to avoid it even though it’s over-used in all processed and restaurant foods these days.
